A few weeks ago, we gave away a pair of Proof sunglasses. Now, thanks to Branched – the company that brought us Proof – you could win the perfect Christmas gift for yourself. WeWood watches aren’t like anything you’ll find elsewhere. They ‘re also doing their bit for the environment, with one tree being planted for every watch sold. I asked the folks behind WeWOOD a few questions and they kindly offered Spit readers the chance to win one of their gorgeous time tellers.
The tree planting initiative is through the conservation organisation American Forests, is that right?
Yes. We collaborate with American Forest and with Trees for the Future. The first works for all watches sold in North America and it sees trees planted for us in USA. Trees for the Future manage all other countries. We choose the countries where the trees are planted when we make our donation (which we do every three months).
The watches are described as “eco cool” and “bringing a little piece of the forest to city life” – can you tell me more about this concept of merging nature with such an urban accessory as the watch?
WeWood watches are an avant-garde approach to sophisticated sustainability. We focus on sustainability by using non toxic materials and 100% natural wood that we find as waste from industrial operations. Wood is recyclable, biodegradable, and can last for centuries. When it is no longer needed, it can be returned to earth. Since processing wood requires smaller amounts of fossil fuels than processing other materials, it releases much less CO2 .Add that to the fact that for every watch sold we plant a tree, and you’ve got the science behind the WeWood way.
What are the types of wood that are used as materials in the WeWood designs? Did you choose these types for a reason?
The watches come in five types of wood; maple, blackwood, a brown “Red Wing Celtis” wood (which is salvaged wood from flooring material waste), an army green “Guaiaco” wood from South America (that is most known for its use in herbal remedies) and Indian Rosewood (chocolate) – a very strong wood used for chess sets and for billiard cues.We choose woods firstly for their strength and only after for fashion.
The watches have a masculine edge to them, but are also very wearable for women. Do you have a key market in mind when designing?
We want our product an initiative to reach as many people as possible, that’s why our models are unisex.
To win your very own WeWood watch, simply pop us an email at info@spitpress.com and tell us what you would do with the very last 5 minutes of your time. Ever. We’ll pick the most creative answer as the winner. also, make sure you head over to the WeWood website and tell us which watch you’d like to win. ENTRIES CLOSE MONDAY, DECEMBER 17TH.
