The Spit Press: The team behind the zine

By Tym • August 15, 2012 • Head Spaces
team behind zine 1

We say one last goodbye to our street press magazine and introduce our new website!

It feels good to be writing this post, even if it’s coming to you eight months overdue. In literal speak The Spit Press magazine died at the end of 2011. We had run ourselves into the ground going full pelt for what (at 20 years old) seemed like a very long time. It had been, simultaneously, the best and most stressful period of our lives as emerging professionals, writers, creatives. But as we finished degrees and investigated the world of full time work, and as the electricity that we’d been so full of began to fizzle, we knew it was time to end production of the magazine and take some time off.

We’d printed 11 issues since April of 2010 from the head quarters of my bedroom and looking back I do sometimes wonder why we often tried to make out that Spit was more than it really was – a bunch of friends ‘playing house’ in the publishing world. But that’s not to sell us short. We are quietly proud of everything we’ve achieved, in small efforts within the community, and in big ways just for ourselves. We’ve been able to publish lots of young writers, turn a humble but bright spotlight on some great things happening in Sydney and beyond and been happily refining our own craft as the issues went by. The events and parties were some wild bonuses.

We did realise that the reasons why Chumpy and I started The Spit Press began to misalign with what each issue was slowly becoming, so we, along with India and Erin, decided to listen to what our collective gut was telling us. It was time to live in different cities, chase other goals and see things in new ways. I did feel like the creator had outgrown what he’d created.

The result of having taken the past eight months off is the new Spit Press website. It is, at the heart, very similar to what we attempted to foster with our magazine. We’ve ditched the competitive nowness of street press which means PR people you can stop calling me at 9:00am on Sunday mornings – I’ve lost all my magical powers! This new season will see Erin, India, Chumpy and I writing to you directly about things we experience through our own conversations. We hope to enrich our readers’ daily browsing by investigating interesting people, places and headspaces with a focus on the arts, travel, food and lifestyle products.

The concept is nothing new, but we have faith that if you check back on us every now and then there will be something here just for you. We take great solace in knowing that we’re not working to any deadlines and that we can let down our hair and write openly, honestly and hopefully interestingly.

Lastly, we just want to say a very overdue thank you to our printers Spotpress, our distributors Attractive Promotions, our iPad and iPhone App developers OcuNeco, our contributors and our readers. We really do hope you continue to enjoy The Spit Press.

Now, start exploring the new site!!
